• She keeps taking all the covers

I’m content to let her sleep

    Hmm

She could be with any other

    But she’s with me

She likes walking in the city

Blue cheese olives with her drink

    Hmm

    Everybody says she’s pretty

But I think that’s such an understatement

The east side is bright outside my window

Her suitcase is right beside my bed

Love is a stupid funny limbo

    As she turned I said

    I don’t know what’s gonna happen
    I’m all shaken up

Cuz I’ve been tripping over my heels

    Falling headfirst into love

Circumstance can wreck the best laid plans

    That’s what it does

But I’m just praying that this time it’ll lighten up

    For us

When I left town, she wrote a letter

    Flip side of a photograph

    Hmm

It said “with you, it’s easy – better”

And I’ve memorized the whole thing front to back

I keep that picture in my glove compartment

A memory from an early day

She calls me late from her apartment

And I say, oh I say

    I don’t know what’s gonna happen
    I’m all shaken up

Cuz I’ve been tripping over my heels

    Falling headfirst into love

Circumstance can wreck the best laid plans

    That’s what it does

But I’m just praying that this time it’ll lighten up

    For us

    I don’t know what’s gonna happen
    I’m all shaken up

Cuz I’ve been tripping over my heels

    Falling headfirst into love

Circumstance can wreck the best laid plans

    That’s what it does

But I’m just praying that this time it’ll lighten up

Oh I’m just praying that this time it’ll lighten up

Yeah I’m just praying that this time it’ll lighten up

    For us

  • Says Red Molly to James, "That's a fine motorbike

Well a girl could feel special on any such like"

Says James to Red Molly, "My hat's off to you

    It's a Vincent Black Lightning, 1952

And I've seen you on the corners and cafés, it seems

Red hair and black leather, my favourite colour scheme"

And he pulled her on behind

And down to Box Hill they did ride

Says James to Red Molly, "Here's a ring for your right hand

But I'll tell you in earnest I'm a dangerous man

For I've fought with the law since I was seventeen

I robbed many a man to get my Vincent machine

    Now I'm twenty-one years, I might make twenty-two

And I don't mind dying, but for the love of you

And if fate should break my stride

Then I give you my Vincent to ride"

"Come down, come down, Red Molly," called Sergeant McRae

"For they've taken young James Adie for armed robbery

Shotgun blast hit his chest, left nothing inside

Oh, come down, Red Molly to his dying bedside"

When she came to the hospital, there wasn't much left

He was running out of road, he was running out of breath

But he smiled to see her cry

And said, "I’ll give you my Vincent to ride"

Says James, "In my opinion,  there's nothing in this world

    Beats a '52 Vincent and a red-headed girl

No Nortons and Indians and Greeveses won't do

Ah, they don't have a soul like a Vincent '52"

Then he reached for her hand and he slipped her the keys

Said, "I've got no further use for these

I see angels on Ariels in leather and chrome

Swooping down from heaven to carry me home"

And he gave her one last kiss and died

And he gave her his Vincent to ride

  • They're shipping Leroy off to war

He don't know what he's fighting for

And it might be six months before

    He gets back to Chicago

    The 16th corridor

    Leroy he gets married green

To a lovely girl they call Moreyn

    He’s 21 and she’s 18

And he loves her with his whole heart

An empty pocket full of dreams

    There ain’t no hero’s victory

This ain’t that kind of song

It’s the kind that don’t come easy

But you keep on keeping on

There’s a light on the horizon

    There’s a full moon and it’s rising

There’s new music to be heard

    He says

    There ain’t no point romanticizing

Set the bar low, no surprises

You just gotta wait your turn

    It’s something that you learn

    It’s a slow, slow burn

    Leroy’s headed off to work

In a clean white apron and a fresh pressed shirt

His fingers numb with blood and dirt

    He’ll miss his children’s birthdays

    But family comes first

There’s a light on the horizon

    There’s a full moon and it’s rising

Won’t you come back home from work

    He says

    There ain’t no point romanticizing

Set the bar low, no surprises

You just gotta wait your turn

    It’s something that you learn

    It’s a slow, slow burn

    Leroy he’s a-getting old

The nights are long, the winters cold

    And Moreyn’s got another growth

And they don’t know how much longer

That’s just the way it goes

    There ain’t no quick recovery

    This ain’t that kinda song

It’s a simple life of love and family

    And waking up at dawn

And it’s digging roots and staying put

    And keeping up your lawn

It’s the kind that don’t come easy

But you keep on keeping on

There’s a light on the horizon

    There’s a tunnel and he’s smiling

There’s a quiet in the world

    He says

Hey pal, you gotta fill the silence

No man is his own island

You’ve got music to be heard

Oh it’s something that you’ll learn

    It’s a slow, slow burn

    It’s a slow, slow burn
